Epidemiologi dimostrano che nei paesi caratterizzati da enormi disparità di reddito tra i più ricchi e i più poveri, sia le persone più influenti che quelli più poveri soffrono di tassi più alti di cattiva salute, di criminalità, di malattie mentali, di problemi ambientali e di violenza.
Quando la vita è iniqua, sia tu che io perdiamo, non importa quanto ognuno di noi due è ricco.
I paesi dell'Ovest sono al loro livello di ineguaglianza più alto mai raggiunto nella storia, dove il nostro senso del prendere e del dare è stato sostituito con quello del prendere tutto quello che si può, per se e soltanto per se stessi.
Sebbene sia uno dei paesi più ricchi del mondo, dove si concentra la metà dei miliardari del mondo, l'America ha di gran lunga il più alto livello di tutti i problemi sociali - criminalità, mancanza di educazione, malattie mentali, suicidi, malattie di tutti i tipi - rispetto a venti paesi, e il Regno Unito è al terzo posto.
Pratiche inique nel commercio
Oltre alla disparità dei redditi, la maggiorparte dei paesi dell'Ovest è palesemente ingiusta nei confronti dei consumatori.
Alla tendenza culturale predominante (zeitgeist*) verso l'individualismo, e verso il 'chi vince prende tutto', che caratterizza i tempi moderni, va imputata la causa di molte delle crisi che oggigiorno affrontiamo nella nostra società, in particolare gli eccessi del settore finanziario, con il suo insistere sul profitto da rendere più grande e migliore ogni anno, ad ogni costo.
Questa mentalità è responsabile per la sequela di inganni che oggigiorno risultano diffusi in ogni settore della società, dal 50 % degli studenti del college che oggi, si sa, imbrogliano agli esami, fino al barare delle aziende, anche di quelle appartenenti ai settori progettati per l'interesse pubblico.
Per esempio, più di tre-quarti delle ricerche che riguardano i farmaci, pubblicate nella letteratura medica, oggi si crede siano scritti in modo nascosto da aziende di pubbliche relazioni ingaggiate dalle compagnie farmaceutiche, che normalmente tengono nascoste informazioni su gravi, e anche potenzialmente mortali, effetti collaterali.
cosa esattamente significa 'fair' ?
'Fair' è una parola con molti significati. Secondo il dizionario, 'fair' significa imparziale, libero da discriminazioni o da disonestà, rispettoso della legge o conforme alle regole. Ma ha anche un'altra connotazione - qualcosa di bello, di puro, di semplice.
Una nave ha un 'fair passage' quando non ci sono ostacoli. Una persona che viaggia con una fitta tabella di marcia, può arrivare in tempo con un 'fair wind' (vento favorevole). Un autore produce una 'fair copy' quando il suo manoscritto è leggibile e senza macchia.
L'equità è in stretta connessione con la verità; la vita è equa quando a ciascuno vengono date analoghe opportunità, quando una decisione è imparziale, quando una cosa è semplicemente e totalmente giusta.
L'equità è l'anello della perfezione; quando Emily Dickenson scrisse 'Ample make this bed', il poema che è stato reso famoso dal film 'Sophie's Choice', e il verso 'In it wait till judgment break / Excellent and fair'
il suo uso della parola 'fair' ha due significati : giustizia e un pezzo di falegnameria perfettamente realizzato. Nella mente della poetessa, e dal suo significato storico, 'fair' evoca la sensazione che qualcosa è puro, equilibrato e vero.
Quello che vogliamo dire non è uniformità o redistribuzione - ma pari opportunità, pari possibilità, pari voce in capitolo sulle aree che influenzano la nostra società, un compenso che è commisurato con il contributo che si dà, un compenso che non arriva a spese di qualcun altro.
Equità non è necessariamente socialismo
L'equità non significa redistribuzione della ricchezza o una uguaglianza su tutti i fronti, sullo stile del socialismo.
La campagna a favore dell'equità non è affatto una giustificazione per il comunismo o il socialismo.
Per esempio, negli Stati Uniti, lo stato che riporta il più basso livello di problemi sociali è New Hampshire, ma è anche quello con la più bassa spesa pubblica. New Hampshire semplicemente non ha una grande disparità di reddito tra i suoi abitanti più ricchi e quelli più poveri. Là ci sono opportunità per tutti.
Nella storia il fatto che ci sia un gruppo di individui ricchi in cima alla società non ha condotto automaticamente alla rivoluzione.
Come dimostrano gli studi, anche i bambini hanno una comprensione sfumata di equità - cioè un bambino che ha lavorato più duramente a scuola merita una valutazione migliore rispetto ad un fannullone.
I livelli più poveri della società in genere sono pronti a ribellarsi solo quando le condizioni sono manifestamente inique, tipo quando il cibo è volutamente reso scarso.
Sulla scia della crisi finanziaria che ha colpito tutto il mondo nel 2008, la collera che la maggiorparte dei cittadini ordinari ha provato, e continua a provare, verso i banchieri e i traders non ha nulla a che fare con il risentimento verso il reddito, ma ha a che fare con un profondo e impellente senso di inequità, che è derivato dal fatto che case di investimento tipo la Goldman Sachs pagarono bonus da primato anche dopo quella recessione che avevano contribuito a generare e che aveva causato a molti altri la perdita del loro lavoro.
Nel bel mezzo di tutte le nostre attuali crisi, il ristabilire l'equità è fin da ora una questione cruciale per la nostra sopravvivenza, per la sopravvivenza della società americana, e, in realtà, per la sopravvivenza del mondo.
La buona notizia è che non ci vuole molto per ristabilire l'equità.
Studi scientifici dimostrano che in qualunque società, se una cultura, basata sul dare opportunità, cade a pezzi a causa del fatto che troppi si prendono troppo, tutto quello che è necessario per trasformare del tutto la situazione è un piccolo gruppo di individui con una forte reciprocità, che invadono la popolazione di individui interessati solo a se stessi.
L'altruismo è l'atto più egoistico di tutti perchè è il comportamento che in modo naturale porta a tutti noi il massimo beneficio.
E' possibile per noi, in realtà è la cosa che ci dà il massimo beneficio, vivere le nostre vite tenendo conto sia di cosa è buono per il nostro mondo sia di cosa è buono per noi stessi.
Siccome è così importante, ho iniziato una Campagna a favore dell'equità, per ristabilire l'equità nelle nostre vite.
Il punto che voglio farti capire, è che non devi aspettare i politici per fare cose che siano più eque per te e per la tua comunità. Tutto quello che c'è da fare sono piccole pratiche che puoi iniziare con te stesso e con quelli che ti circondano. Come dimostrano prove scientifiche, il tuo modo di agire può diffondere velocemente come un virus e cambiare le tue relazioni, il tuo posto di lavoro, la tua comunità, e in definitiva il mondo
Tu puoi ristabilire l'equità nella tua vita, nella tua comunità, nel tuo posto di lavoro e nel tuo paese seguendo questi semplici principi di equità, descritti di seguito

Western countries in the main are at their most unequal in history, where our sense of taking ang giving has been replaced with taking whatever you can get for you and yours alone.
Although one of the wealthiest countries in the world with half the world's billionaires, America has far and away the highest level of all social problems - crime, lack of education, mental illness, suicide, disease of all varieties - of twenty countries, and the United Kingdom has the third highest.
Unfair practices in business
Besides income disparity, most Western countries are blatantly unfair to consumers.
The individualistic, winner-take-all zeitgeist of modern times is to blame for many of the crises we presently face in our society, particularly the excesses of the financial sector, with its insistence on a bigger and better profit every year, at any cost.
This mindset is responsible for the raft of deceit that now goes on in every sector of society, from the 50 per cent of college students now known to cheat on exams to corporate cheating, even in sectors designed for the public interest.
Up to three-quarters of all research published in the medical literature about pharmaceutical drugs, for instance, is now believed to be ghostwritten by public relations firms hired by drug companies, with serious and even potentially fatal side-effects routinely concealed.
What exactly does fair mean ? Fair is a word with many meanings. According to the dictionary, 'fair' means impartial, free from discrimination or dishonesty, and law-abiding or conforming to rules. But it also has another connotation - one of beauty, purity and ease.
A ship has a 'fair passage' when unobstructed. A person traveling with a tight schedule can arrive on time with 'a fair wind'. When an author makes a 'fair copy', his manuscript is legible and unblemished.
Fairness is a close relation of truth; life is fair when someone is given an equal chance, when a decision is evenhanded, when something is simply and wholly right. Fairness has the ring of perfection; when Emily Dickenson wrote 'Ample make this bed', the poem made famous in the movie Sophie's Choice, and the line 'In it wait till judgment break/Excellent and fair', her use of fair had two meanings : justice and a piece of carpentry perfectly rendered. In the poet's mind - and from its historical meaning - 'fair' conjures up a sense that something is pure, balanced and true.
What we mean by it is not sameness or redistribution - but an equal chance, an equal possibility, an equal say in areas that affect our society, a reward commensurate with contribution, a reward that does not come at someone else's expense.
Fairness is not necessarily socialism
Fairness doesn't mean redistribution of wealth or a socialist-style, across-the-board equality. The Fairness Campaign is emphatically not an apology for communism or socialism.
For instance, the state in the United States that reports the lowest level of social problems is New Hampshire, but it also has one of the lowest public expenditures of any state. New Hampshire simply does not have a huge disparity between the income of its richest and poorest inhabitants. There are opportunities there for all.
Throughout history the fact that there is a wealthy group of individuals at the top of a society has not automatically made for revolution.
As studies show, even children have a nuanced understanding of fairness - that a child who worked harder at school deserves a better grade han a slacker. Poorer levels of society are usually prompted to rise up in rebellion only when conditions are manifestly unfair, such as when food is deliberately made scarce.
In the wake of the worldwide financial crisis of 2008 the fury that most ordinary citizens felt - and still feel - toward bankers and traders had nothing to do with income resentment but a deep and compelling sense of unfairness that investment houses like Goldman Sacks still pay record bonuses after the recession they had helped to create caused so many others to lose their jobs.
In the midst of all of our current crises, re-establishing fairness is crucial to our survival right now, to the survival of our American society - and ideed to the survival fo the world.
The good news is that doesn't take much to re-establish fairness. Scientific studies shows that in any society, if a culture of turn-taking falls apart with too manu taking too much, all it requires is a small group of individuals committed to strong reciprocity to 'invade' a population of self-interested individuals and turn the entire thing around.
Selflessness is the most self-serving act of all because it is the position naturally most beneficial to us all.
It is possible - indeed most beneficial - for us to live our lives taking into account both what is good for our world and what is good for ourselves.
Because this is so important, I'm starting a Fairness Campaign to re-establish fairness in our lives.
The point I want to impress upon you is that you don't have to wait for your elected officials to make things fairer for you and for your community. All it takes is small practices you can start with yourself and your immediate circle. As the scientific evidence shows, your own practices can quickly become viral and change your relationships, your work place, your community - and ultimately the world.
You can re-establish fairness in your life, in your community, in your workplace and in your country by following the few simple Fairness Principles, below
